Wisdom teeth are the four permanent molars located at the back corners of your mouth on the top and bottom.

Wisdom tooth extraction is necessary when one or more of these Wisdom teeth grow in sideways, partially emerge from the gum or remain trapped beneath the gum and bone – resulting in pain, infection and swelling. Alternatively, if the wisdom tooth doesn’t have room to grow this could result in the teeth pushing other teeth or “crowding” of the mouth.

Sometimes we recommend Wisdom teeth extraction even if impacted teeth aren’t causing problems, as a preventive measure against potential future problems.

Some common signs of possible impacted wisdom teeth are:

  • Bad breath
  • Jaw pain
  • Swelling, redness and tenderness of the gums
  • An unpleasant taste when you bite down on food
  • Headache
  • An unpleasant taste when you bite down on food

Quick Temporary Wisdom Teeth Pain Relief

If you can’t get to our office here are a few things that can give you some temporary relief:

  • Dissolve a tablespoon of salt in a cup of hot water and rinse your mouth with it – as hot as you can handle without burning yourself.
  • Apply an icepack to the swollen side of the face. This can help reduce the inflammation and pain.
  • Put a clove on the painful tooth. Don’t chew it or spit it out until the pain is gone / reduced. For better results, if you have some clove oil you can massage the tooth and gums first, then put the clove on your tooth until the pain is reduced.

Most insurance plans cover wisdom teeth removal and we can bill directly to them – Alternately we can arrange an easy monthly payment plan for you.
