Paediatric dentist Kitchener Ontario

Decay can develop very quickly in young children.  Since they are just learning how to care for themselves mistakes and oversights are a normal part of growing up.  This is where a good relationship with a paediatric dentist can help you educate kids to be healthy so they keep their beautiful smile for life!

At Solar Dental we provide a comfortable, fun environment where kids can have a positive experience when they visit the dentist.  You’ll find our staff to be very friendly and happy to be with children…and, of course, our dentists know just what to do to calm a child or provide the right distraction so the treatment can be done properly.

Establish The Right Understanding At A Young Age

The Canadian Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that parent should bring in their babies for a dental check-up as early as within six months from when their teeth start erupting.

If teeth have not started erupting by their first birthday, you should let a dentist have a look to see if there might be some potential problems.

We believe it is important for young children to get the proper care and guidance right from the start.  We’ll teach them how to take care of their teeth in fun ways so they look forward to their daily oral hygiene routine.

In addition to establishing proper oral hygiene habits, it is also important to get children to become comfortable with the idea of coming to the dentist’s office regularly.  This way they get comfortable with the dentist and the staff so if something comes up where they need treatment, it will be a stress free experience for all.

Tooth decay can advance very quickly at the younger ages so we recommend you visit our office every six months.  Kids should understand that a dentist is their friend and partner in helping them keep a beautiful smile and healthy teeth for life.

It’s A Sweet Problem

Tooth decay is caused by sugars that remain in the mouth and turn into acid.  Acid breaks down the teeth so they start to decay.  Sugar also generates plaque, which is a breeding ground for bacteria…and bacteria causes tooth decay.

If a child is not taking care of their teeth properly, it’s better to find out early.  A dentist can spot early signs of tooth decay and let you know what spots your child is missing in their brushing and flossing routine.

In addition to proper self-care, we recommend fluoride treatments, teeth cleanings and checkups twice a year.  Sometimes, depending on the situation, it is a good idea to use tooth sealants to “seal” the deep grooves in your child’s teeth to prevent decay.  These need to be monitored regularly to make sure they are working properly.  The six-month schedule works well for tooth sealants as well.

Caring for Your Child’s Teeth at Home

A proper prevention program begins while the baby is still feeding with a baby bottle…in fact, it used to be called baby bottle tooth decay or nursing caries.  Once a child’s diet starts to grow beyond breast milk, their teeth are at risk of decay.

As your child’s teeth emerge, be sure to check them every two weeks and inspect for lines and discolouration that may be caused by decay (sugar bugs). New teeth are especially vulnerable to tooth decay so we recommend young children should brush their teeth as much as four times a day…after breakfast, lunch dinner and at bed time.
