Periodontist services London Ontario

Have you ever spit out a little blood when brushing your  teeth?  If it happens regularly, it could be a warning sign that you have some level of gum disease or periodontitis.

If your dentist has mentioned that you have periodontal (or gum) disease, you are not alone.  Many Canadians have some form of this problem.

Periodontal diseases can range from simple gum inflammation to a serious decaying of the soft tissue, gums and even the bone that supports your teeth.  In more serious cases, you can lose your teeth.

Gum disease can not only affect your teeth, it can severely impact the health of the rest of your body resulting in diseases like diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, pneumonia, and cancer.

In its mild form, gum disease is called gingivitis.  Your gums are infected, but they are still treatable through simple oral hygiene and regular dental visits.

However, if the infection in your gums is not treated in time, the infection can go below the gum line into the jawbone.  When infection goes below the gum line it is considered to be quite serious.  The serious form of gum disease is called periodontitis.

Both gingivitis and periodontitis are to be taken seriously, since they can be a factor in serious health problems in the body.  So, if you have any symptoms you should see a periodontist as soon as possible.

Early Diagnosis Can Prevent Serious Problems

Look For These Symptoms:

  1. Red, swollen gums – The first signs of gum disease is often easy to spot. If you see that your gums are unusually red in certain spots, let your dentist have a look at it.
  2. Gums feeling tender and painful – You may not notice the redness, but you will certainly notice the pain when you eat or when you brush your teeth. If your teeth or gums are painful for a few days in a row, it might be a sign of gum disease or periodontitis.
  3. Bleeding gums – Certainly, if your gums are bleeding all the time, you should get it checked out. However, if your gums bleed a little every time you brush or floss your teeth, after a week or so, it’s probably time to go for a dental check up
  4. Constant bad breath – If your breath is constantly awful, especially if breath mints don’t even help, it’s time to see a periodontist. Bacteria easily grows in a warm, moist environment like your mouth.  Bacteria turns into plaque.  The plaque you have, the worse your breath is likely to be.  Bacteria releases toxins that can irritate the gums and teeth and have a foul smell. If all you have is gingivitis, it won’t affect your breath too much.  Gum disease is what really makes your breath smell bad.
  5. Smaller gums – If you notice that your teeth seem to look longer than they used to, chances are your gums are shrinking. When your jawbone starts to break down your gums start separating from the teeth.  This creates a pocket where bacteria can accumulate.  If you notice your gums receding, contact your periodontist immediately.
  6. Sensitive teeth – When your gums start to recede, the sensitive part of your tooth is exposed. Cold liquids and air can make your teeth hurt.  This condition often goes hand in hand with receding gums.
  7. Wiggly or shifting teeth – If gum disease has been attacking your jawbone, it can loosen your teeth. Sometimes teeth can get so loose, that several or all of your teeth can shift to a new position.  Or, they may not fit together as well as they used to when you bite.  Periodontitis is the main cause of wiggly or shifting teeth.
