There are many teeth whitening systems to choose from.  If you pick the wrong one, there could be bad repercussions for your teeth and gum health.  The right teeth whitening system will make your teeth white just the right amount and keep them that way for a significant amount of time.

Teeth Whitening Tooth Pastes

If your toothpaste contains some light abrasives, it will help to whiten your teeth.  Some whitening tooth pastes can contain chemicals to polish your teeth and give them a bit of a shine.  Other tooth pastes also add chemicals for teeth stain removal.

Whitening tooth pastes that are normally available to consumers do not contain bleach so they can only remove surface stains, to a limited extent.   Professional level toothpastes and whitening products contain carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide.  These chemicals can lighten the tooth’s colour by about one shade because they can go deep within the tooth.

When a dentist applies teeth whitening, they can make your teeth three to eight shades lighter.

Over The Counter Whitening Strips And Gels

Teeth whitening gels are made of peroxide based gels.  You put it directly on to your teeth with a small brush.  The strength of the peroxide varies from product to product.  If you follow the directions carefully you will see results within a few days.  You can expect the results to last for up to four months.

Whitening strips are applied directly on the teeth.  Since they are almost invisible, you can use them during your work day.  You can expect to see result within a few days.  The effect can last up to four months.

Teeth Whitening Rinses

Teeth whitening has never been easier!  Whitening rinses freshen your breath and reduce dental plaque.  They also help prevent gum disease.  Just swish the liquid in your mouth for sixty seconds twice a day before you brush your teeth.  It can take up to twelve weeks to see the results.

This is a nice gimmick, but not really very effective.  Whitening strips are applied to your teeth for up to thirty minutes each day while the rinse is in contact with your teeth for a maximum of two minutes… not much chance of  having any significant effect.

Tray Based Tooth Whitening Systems

You can purchase these over the counter or from a dentist.  Tray based teeth whitening involves filling a tray that is molded to your teeth with a teeth whitening gel that contains hydrogen peroxide and a bleaching agent.  You wear the tray in the evening for a couple of hours for four weeks or more, depending on how much whitening you need.

Teeth Whitening London Ontario In The Dentist’s Office

This is the quickest way to get really white teeth.  The dentist applies bleaching and whitening products directly on to the teeth…sometimes in combination with a special “blue” light or laser.  You’ll see good results in one or two thirty minute sessions.  However, if your teeth are badly stained, it may take more sessions to get to the point you want.

Should YOU Use A Teeth Whitening System To Whiten Your Teeth?

  • Bleaching is not recommended for children under 16. Applying teeth whitening product under this age can irritate the pulp of cause your teeth to become sensitive to cold foods.
  • Teeth whitening is not recommended for pregnant women or if they are breast feeding their child.
  • If you have sensitive teeth or allergies, get the recommendation of a dentist before trying teeth whitening products.
  • If you have receding gums or defective restorations, see a dentist before trying any teeth whitening systems.
  • If you have gum disease or worn tooth enamel, generally teeth whitening is not recommended. Ask your dentist before trying any kind of teeth whitening treatment.
  • Cavities and exposed roots need to be treated before any whitening procedure. Whitening systems will penetrate decaying teeth and the inner areas of the tooth.  This can cause your teeth to be sensitive to cold foods.
  • Fillings, crown and restorations do not whiten with teeth whitening agents. Get your teeth whitening done first.
  • If you have already had fillings and restorations it might be a better idea to get veneers, crowns or dental bonding. Ask your dentist about your options.
  • Smokers will have limited success unless they quit smoking, particularly during the bleaching process.
  • Realistically, you can expect your teeth to be slightly whiter than the whites of your eyes. Don’t expect magical results.

Teeth whitening is ideal for people who have healthy, unrestored teeth (no fillings) and gums. Individuals with yellow tones to their teeth respond best. But this cosmetic dentistry procedure is not recommended for everyone.
