Dental Braces London Ontario

Imperfect, stained, broken, or misaligned teeth can not only be inconvenient, but for some people they can be a source of embarrassment and lack of self-esteem.  Even if a patient has great oral hygiene, it doesn’t stop people from making negative judgements about crooked teeth.

It is important to keep an eye on the development of teeth of young children.  As soon as permanent teeth begin to emerge, it is important to visit the dentist regularly to monitor their growth pattern.

If crooked teeth are found, childhood is the perfect time to get them corrected.  The mouth is still growing.  The tissues are more malleable and flexible than they would be in adulthood.  It is best if the crooked teeth can be fixed before adolescence because at that age appearance means everything.  Many teenagers dread the idea of braces.  Some even refuse to wear them.

Modern braces can be quite invisible compared to older systems but they are still visible and can cause problems for self-conscious teens.  Avoid the drama.  Try to take care of the problem as early in childhood as possible.

Don’t Fixate On Invisible Dental Braces

Yes, of course it would be nice if you didn’t need braces.  But if you do need them, let your dentist know your preferences, but go with their judgement.  If upon your insistence the dentist sets you up with Invisalign or other invisible braces and they don’t do the job, it will end up costing you more time and money.  Work with your dentist and get the right kind of braces the first time.

Invisible bracket braces blend in with your teeth, so everyone wants them.  However, this technology is compatible with only a small percentage of patients.  The ‘stylish’ option is not always the best way to go.

Keep your eye on the final result and find the best way to achieve it, in consultation with the professional who spends all her / his life in the field.

Pros And Cons Of Different Types Of Dental Braces

Metal braces

These are the traditional dental braces.  They are the metal wires and brackets that most people associate with braces.

Even in this category, the modern brackets are smaller and less noticeable.  People won’t be asking you “which radio stations” you pick up…

The new heat-activated archwires use your body heat to help teeth move more quickly and less painfully than in the past so your overall time for wearing braces is significantly less.

Metal Braces Pros:

This is the least expensive option.  You might want to get colored bands for a “cool” look.

Metal Braces Cons:

Most noticeable type of braces

Ceramic Dental Braces

Ceramic braces are the same size and shape as metal braces, except that they have tooth-colored or clear brackets that blend in to teeth. Some even use tooth-colored wires to be even less noticeable.

Ceramic Braces Pros:

Ceramic braces are less noticeable than metal braces.  They move teeth into the correct position much faster than clear plastic aligners (Invisalign)

Ceramic Braces Cons:

Ceramic dental braces are more expensive than metal braces and the brackets stain more easily.  More care is required to keep them clean.

Lingual Dental Braces

Lingual braces are the same as traditional metal braces, except that the brackets and wires are placed on the inside of teeth.

Lingual Braces Pros:

Lingual braces can not be seen from the outside.  If this is a viable option for you it’s a good way to go.

Lingual Braces Cons:

Because lingual braces are on the inside of your teeth they are more difficult to clean.  They are also more expensive than dental braces or ceramic dental braces.

Lingual braces can be more uncomfortable at first.  The periodic adjustments that all braces require take more time and are more difficult than traditional dental braces.

Invisalign

Invisalign are the famous “invisible” braces.  They are custom made for each patient and look like the mouth guards that hockey players use.  The clear plastic aligners are replaced every two weeks.  Each new set of aligners is custom made for your teeth, specifically.

Invisalign Pros:

Invisalign dental braces are almost invisible.  There are no restrictions on what a patient can eat or drink since they have to be removed while eating.

Invisalign Cons:

Invisalign may not work for serious dental problems and are only available for adults and teens, not children.  This is the most expensive option.  Since they can be easily removed they can be easily lost or damaged.  In some cases the treatment can take longer too.
