Tooth implant Kitchener Ontario

Have you lost a tooth and wonder what to do about it?

Sometimes people who have lost teeth feel self-conscious about their looks.  They are afraid to smile or talk. “It’s just a missing tooth”, they try to console themselves… but they are afraid people won’t like them…  Unfortunately, people in our society are judged by their appearance, so it is true to some extent.

Biting into things, chewing food can be uncomfortable with a missing tooth.  If you have lost a tooth you may find yourself avoiding eating properly because of the discomfort.  This can lead to malnutrition and other health problems.

Tooth Replacement Options

Procedures like dental bridges and dentures are not comfortable or even possible for some people due to sore spots, poor ridges or gagging.

In addition, dental bridges have to be attached to teeth adjacent to the space left by the missing tooth.

On the other hand, replacing a missing tooth isn’t very difficult these days but people avoid treatment because they don’t know what’s involved.

What’s Involved In Tooth Implant Surgery?

A missing tooth means the roots are not there anymore.  A tooth implant is a medical grade titanium fixture that is surgically placed in an opening that your dentist makes in the jawbone.  Over time, it fuses to the living bone cells of the jaw.

After the implant becomes attached to the jawbone it acts as a new “root”.  A dental crown (dental cap) is shaped and coloured to look like a natural tooth and placed on top of the dental implant.  It fills the space left in the mouth by the missing tooth.

The dental crown (“dental cap”) is made from stainless steel, a combination of metals, porcelain fused to metal, all porcelain or resin.  It is permanently cemented on to the dental implant.

A dental implant can replace a single tooth, multiple teeth or even a full upper and lower set of teeth.

An advantage of implants is that no adjacent teeth need to be prepared or shaved down to hold your new replacement tooth / teeth in place.

Generally speaking, if you are healthy enough to have a routine dental extraction or oral surgery a dental implant could be an option for you.

Dental implants can only work if you have enough bone in the jaw.  The bone has to be strong enough to hold the implant firmly.  If the bone is not strong enough, a further surgery called “bone augmentation” or “bone grafting” may be necessary.

In addition, you have to have healthy gums and the teeth adjacent to the implant must also be healthy and strong.  Good oral hygiene and regular dental checkups are a good sign that you could be eligible for a tooth implant.

Other health factors such as heavy smoking, diabetes, heart disease or if you have had radiation therapy to the head and neck area means the dentist will have to do a careful analysis to see if a dental implant could be an option for you.

Alternative To Bone Grafting

If you don’t have enough bone or a strong enough jaw bone for dental implants, a metal frame can be fitted into the jawbone.  The posts that would have been implanted into your jawbone are attached to the frame.  The dental crown is attached to the posts and the whole frame including the posts eventually fuses into the living tissue of the jawbone.

Advantages Of Dental Implants

  1. Improved Appearance – A tooth implant will match your existing teeth.
  2. Permanent – You will never need to replace a tooth implant.
  3. Improved Speech – Dentures can slip around in your mouth and even fall out when you laugh or eat. When you compensate for this slipping your words are often slurred or you may mumble so they don’t fall out.  No such problems with tooth implants.
  4. Easier Eating – Since dental implants are securely fixed in the jawbone, they are as strong as the rest of your teeth. There are no restrictions on what you can eat.
  5. Improved Self Esteem – A tooth implant allows you to smile confidently. No more missing tooth!
  6. Improved Oral Health – Since your adjacent teeth are not shaved down when dental implant technology is used, your teeth are healthier.
  7. Durability – With good care, dental implants can last a lifetime.
