Why Visit A Dental Hygienist Regularly?

  • We’ll help you keep your natural teeth for a lifetime!
  • We can help you by detecting dental problems early so dental treatment can be provided before it becomes a serious problem.
  • Early detection can ward off gum disease – Gum disease is the no. 1 cause of tooth loss in adults.
  • To maintain a healthy, beautiful smile! Research shows that a nice smile ranks among the top three aspects of a person’s appearance.
  • If you are not happy with the colour of your teeth as you age, we can help! Teeth cleaning and teeth whitening go hand in hand.

Ask our dental hygienists about the latest teeth whitening products available.  We offer great in-office or take-home options.

Our Dental Hygiene Services Kitchener Ontario Include These Preventive Services:

  • Our dental hygienist may take x-rays to help determine if you have signs of bone loss. Signs of bone loss can indicate periodontal disease.  The earlier we catch it the more likely it is that you will have full recovery.
  • Sometimes tooth decay is not visible on the outside of your teeth. X-rays can help your dentist diagnose tooth decay which may not be clearly seen otherwise.
  • A dental hygienist often probes and measures your gum line if they see something suspicious. We can often detect signs of gingivitis and periodontal disease through gum line analysis.
  • Our dental hygienist cleans your teeth with specialized instruments to remove plaque and tartar from above your gum line.
  • If it is possible to remove a stain by polishing it, our hygienist will also polish stains off of your teeth.
  • If needed, we will floss between your teeth for a thorough cleaning.
  • We may also apply a fluoride treatment to help prevent cavities.

The Importance Of Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride treatments can help prevent tooth decay and gum disease. In adults, fluoride treatments can also help prevent cavities on root surfaces and reduce sensitivity.

Your Children May Need Sealants

Sealants are recommended for first and second molars on all children. Sealants help prevent cavities by filling in the grooves of the biting surface of molars.

Scaling And Root Planing Are Part Of Many Dental Hygiene Treatments

Sometimes plaque and tartar can hide gum disease.  If our hygienist discovers active periodontal disease (gum disease) during the dental hygiene exam, a normal dental hygiene treatment with just cleaning may not be enough.  We may also need to do scaling and root planing.  Scaling and Root Planing is a procedure to remove plaque, tartar and bacteria from below the gum line.

If you require a lot of scaling and root planning, it may take more than one appointment to get everything done.  We may also have to numb the areas we are cleaning to make it more comfortable.

We may also prescribe medications to help with treatment of this condition.

In addition, it may be necessary to do an irrigation procedure of your gums and/or laser treatment.

How Do You Know If You Have Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal Disease Requires Urgent Treatment

Laser Debridement Therapy

Laser therapy is necessary when excessive bleeding is present and in conjunction with Scaling and Root Planing. The laser kills bacteria and diseased tissue, which promotes regeneration of new and healthy gum tissue.

How To Avoid Pain, Tooth Loss And Many Diseases

Tooth decay is known as the second most prevalent common disease, after the common cold. Without effective treatment it can lead to pain, tooth loss, and sometimes worse illnesses.

Almost a quarter of U.S children from ages two to five, and half of those aged 12-15 have periodontal disease.  However, most people can solve this problem easily.  You can prevent tooth decay from harming your teeth with a proper regimen of dental hygiene.

Keep in mind:  No single “magic bullet” can stop tooth decay in every case. Fighting decay is a process of preventive maintenance.  With proper care, your teeth can last a lifetime.

You need to practice good oral hygiene at home, and get regular cleanings and checkups at our office.

We use special tools to remove buildups of plaque (a bacterial biofilm) and tartar (a hardened deposit, also called calculus) from your teeth.

We may also use hand-held instruments, ultrasonic scalers, or both to give your teeth a thorough cleaning.

After the cleaning we check thoroughly for decay, and treat cavities when necessary.
