Gum Disease Treatment Cambridge Ontario

Gum disease starts with inflammation in the gum line.  It affects the teeth’s surrounding bone if left untreated.

Do You Need Gum Disease Treatment?

Because gum disease or periodontitis is painless, it can only be identified through symptoms:

  • Bleeding gums
  • Swollen and red gums
  • Loose teeth
  • Bad breath
  • Bad taste
  • Receding gums
  • Pus around the teeth and gums.

Gum disease treatment options

Gum disease treatment involves thoroughly cleaning pockets around teeth and preventing damage to the surrounding bone. Nonsurgical treatments are performed if the disease is in its initial stage.

Nonsurgical Gum Disease Treatment Options

  • Scaling – involves removing tartar and bacteria from teeth surfaces and under gums using instruments, a laser or ultrasonic device.
  • Root planing – prevents the accumulation of tartar and bacteria. It involves smoothening of root surfaces and removing bacteria that delays the healing process.
  • Topical antibiotics can also be placed in the groove between the gums and teeth.

Surgical Gum Disease Treatment Options

Dental surgery may be needed to treat advanced periodontitis. The possibilities are:

  • Flap or pocket reduction surgery– Tiny incisions are made to the gum to lift back gum tissue and expose roots for better root planing and scaling. If there’s bone loss, your dentist may perform bone surgery to smoothen shallow craters in the bone induced by moderate or advanced bone loss. The underlying bone is re-contoured before suturing the gum tissue in place. This also helps reduce cavities, making it difficult for bacteria to collect and grow.
  • Soft tissue grafts– reinforces damaged gum tissue by removing some tissue from the roof of your mouth or some other donor source and stitching to the spot. This controls gum recession and gives a more pleasing appearance by covering exposed roots.
  • Bone grafting– this is performed if the bone surrounding the tooth root has been destroyed. It prevents bone loss by holding the tooth in place with small fragments of your bone or synthetic or donated bone pieces. Combined with advanced tissue engineering techniques, this initiates the re-growth of natural bone and tissue in your body.
  • Guided tissue regeneration– involves inserting biocompatible fabric between the existing bone and gum tissue. It prevents unwanted tissue from entering the healing area and destroys bacteria to help with the re-growth of any bone and connective tissue.

Prevent Gum Disease With Good oral hygiene

Besides gum disease treatment, maintaining good oral health also helps reduce or prevent periodontitis. It includes brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day and using a soft toothbrush that’s replaced every 3-4 months.

Even electric toothbrushes help remove plaque and tartar while mouth rinses reduce plaque in between teeth. Stopping smoking and chewing tobacco, using prescribed toothpaste with fluoride also help.
